Twenty miles south of the airport in Memphis, Tennessee is Tunica, Mississippi. In the gaming metropolis, one building stands tall above the surrounding landscape: the Gold Strike Casino Resort. The casino previously hosted the World Poker Open, a World Poker Tour (WPT) event, one of the legendary Southern poker events. The casino recently underwent a complete renovation of the property, highlighted by a gutting of each of its 1,133 rooms, which now boast new décor and Las Vegas style amenities.
Last week, guests at the Gold Strike noticed something profoundly different about its rooms. Each of the 1,133 guest quarters, including 125 suites, now has a flat panel television, writing desks, club chairs, and a distinctly modern flair. The hotel had not seen a major makeover in the previous 12 years and, despite the fact that its rooms received accolades in 2007, it underwent major changes in 2008. Every guest room now features brand new carpet, bedding, and décor. Some suites contain whirlpool baths, which were moved from the middle of the room in the previous design to their proper place in the bathroom.
Gold Strike Casino The Gold Strike Casino covers 50,000 square feet, and includes over 1400 slot machines, over 40 table games, and a 16 table poker room. Since the Gold Strike is owned by MGM Mirage, its patrons can accumulate points into their MGM Mirage Players Club accounts when they visit this or the company's other properties. The hotel has also come to embrace the local Memphis culture. The town, which is located about a half-hour north of Tunica and connected by interstate, was the former home of music icon Elvis Presley. Graceland, as the site is known, is one of the premier tourist destinations in the Southeastern United States. Memphis is also the home of the National Civil Rights Museum, which is housed at the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King, Jr. lived out his final moments in 1968. The Gold Strike has introduced “Rock N Rendezvous” packages that allow guests to spend time at Beale Street, Peabody Place, and other famous Memphis sights.
Across from the 16 table poker room on the casino’s second level is the brand new Red Door Night Club. The atmosphere inside is reminiscent of a Las Vegas club and is unique to the nine casinos that make up the gaming offering in Tunica. Although the poker room is a bit livelier at night because of the volume emanating from across the hallway, it is still much quieter than the rest of the casino.
Behind the Red Door Night Club is the Gold Strike’s main theater, which houses 730 people. It is about one-third of the size of the largest auditorium in Tunica, which can be found at Harrah’s, formerly the Grand Casino. That property was re-branded earlier this year. Gold Strike officials stated that the current economy has forced them to reevaluate entertainment choices as well as scale back musical acts and other headliners that are brought in to attract patrons.
The poker room has new décor that follows in a similar modern look to the rest of the hotel. An oversized snack and coffee bar was removed, creating more space for players and staff to scurry about. On the first Sunday of every month, Gold Strike hosts a $335 buy-in $10,000 Guaranteed poker tournament that shells out 6,000 starting chips to each player and there are no rebuys or add-ons. The casino runs an $80 buy-in $1,500 Guaranteed on all other Sundays. All poker room tournaments have 20 minute blind levels, with the exception of the $10,000 Guaranteed, in which blinds are 30 minutes in duration.
In the main casino, 1,300 slots and 56 tables allow poker players to be able to break away from the game. Offered on the casino floor are Blackjack, Caribbean Stud, Lucky Ladies, Let it Ride, Three Card Poker, Four Card Poker, Craps, Baccarat, and the newest member of the Gold Strike family, Mississippi Stud. Currently an MGM Mirage casino, Gold Strike has recently changed out its chips as well.
The casino used to play host to the World Poker Open, which was a World Poker Tour sanctioned event. However, the WPT will head to Biloxi, Mississippi for the Southern Poker Championship at the Beau Rivage during Season VII in 2009. In 2008, Brett Faustman bested a field of 259 entrants in the World Poker Open, defeating a final table that included “The Alabama Cowboy” Hoyt Corkins, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Freddy Deeb. The 2007 installment, which saw 294 players take to the felts, was won by Bryan Sumner, who beat PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu heads-up. MGM Mirage also owns Beau Rivage.
